For decades, orthodontia has been used to fix patient’s smiles. With the many orthodontic treatments available, children, teenagers and even adults can benefit from braces.
There are many different types of braces available. These include conventional metal braces, ceramic braces, and invisible aligners. If you are one of the millions of Americans with a “bite” problem, you may benefit from braces.
What specific issues can braces fix?
- Misaligned Jaw
- Misaligned Teeth due to:
- Crowding of teeth
- Spaces between teeth
- Misaligned Teeth due to:
- Overbite
- Underbite
- Misaligned Jaw
A misaligned jaw is often due to an uneven bite. Over time, jaw misalignment can cause pain and other complications. Orthodontic treatment helps to straighten and align your teeth, putting your jaw in the correct position. Often correcting a misaligned jaw will also have an effect on your face. Your face may appear more symmetrical and even.
Crowding and Spacing
Crowding occurs when there simply is not enough room in the mouth for the teeth to comfortably fit. Too many teeth in too small a space can cause many problems. Crowding makes it difficult to clean properly between teeth. This can cause tooth decay. Crowding is one of the most common problems that can be solved by orthodontic treatment. Braces can realign the teeth into a natural position.
Spacing, the opposite of crowding, is a gap between teeth. Many people have a gap between their two front teeth. Spacing can lead to decay and gum disease. Braces can gently realign the teeth to their correct position.
Overbite and Underbite
Overbites transpire when your upper jaw extends too far past your lower jaw. The most common cause of an overbite is the shape and/or size of the teeth or jaw. This type of bite can wear down the teeth, especially the two front teeth. Also, an overbite can cause damage to the gums. Braces can slowly realign the teeth and jaw to fix an overbite.
Underbites happen when the lower jaw extends past the upper jaw. It can be the result of a lower jaw that is too big or an upper jaw that is too small. This type of bite puts stress on the jaw joints and if left untreated can bring about tension headaches and jaw conditions. This condition is typically more inconvenient to treat and may require a person to wear braces for a longer period of time compared to someone with a mild overbite. However, when the condition is severe, it can cause more serious collateral problems. It should not discourage someone from seeking treatment.
