Braces and Invisalign are both used to slowly straighten an individual’s teeth, however they have a variety of differences. If you are planning to get standard braces or Invisalign, Doctor Lee at Burlingame Smile Studio can provide you with either.
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is a patented orthodontic system that uses clear aligners that are switched out every few months until the teeth are moved to their proper place. Invisalign performs the same function that braces do. The majority of men and women that choose Invisalign over braces are working professionals over the age of 20 who may feel as if they are too old for traditional metal braces. It is important to remember that it is never too late, and you are never too old to straighten your teeth with braces or Invisalign.
What are the main differences between traditional braces and Invisalign?
- Braces are metal and have a wire running through them
- An Invisalign aligner is like a retainer that is clear and plastic
- Braces need to be tightened every 4 to 6 weeks in order to shift the teeth
- Invisalign straightens or shifts the teeth with new aligners that move teeth progressively to their proper position
- Braces use rubber bands to tighten the metal which moves the teeth into place
Oftentimes, your orthodontist will allow you to choose the colors of the rubber bands that hold the wire in place. Invisalign retainers can be removed when it is necessary to eat, brush the teeth, or floss. Both braces and Invisalign require an in-person consultation and check-ups with your orthodontist
When should you consider getting braces or Invisalign?
You should consider opting for some form of orthodontia such as conventional braces or Invisalign once all of your adult teeth have grown in, however, there is no age limit. You are never too old to straighten your teeth and improve your smile. The importance of straight teeth goes beyond what most people might imagine, so if you are considering braces or Invisalign, do not let your age stop you from doing so.
