By purchasing a retainer, you invest in the smile and oral health of your child. But less than a week later, they come home from school and say, “I’ve lost my backup!” Here are some ways to help your kids keep this expensive piece of furniture out of the trash.
Retainers can help solve various mouth and jaw problems but are usually worn after removing the braces.
Your child will need their own custom retainer to keep their teeth in the new position. This step is as important for the orthodontic process as wearing braces, so losing the holder and removing it can delay the completion of orthodontic treatment. Spare brackets are expensive and without them you can break your child’s teeth again.
4 Ways to Avoid Lost Retainers:
1. Customize the retainer with a bright color or your child’s favorite figure or design. They will be more excited about the maintenance of personalized equipment.
2. Always place the retainer close to the case so that you do not lose it. Do not rely on a handkerchief for storage, even a quick snack. Add a name label to the case.
3. Ask the lab to put your child’s name and your phone number in the plastic. This is often done for both retainers and dentures.
4. Make sure your child follows these tips and hopefully you’ll never hear, “I lost my retainer!” again.
